Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, small businesses around the country will participate in Small Business Saturday. This event, developed by American Express, offers the opportunity for many small businesses to stake a claim in the busiest shopping week of the year.
Nearly three years ago, New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg and American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault, announced the inaugural first Small Business Saturday, a national initiative to encourage shoppers to support small and local business in their communities.
Bloomberg appealed to shoppers, saying, “This year, if you have the opportunity to shop on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, make it a point to visit local small businesses. It really can make an enormous difference for merchants in our communities.”
In an effort to promote the event, American Express, has established initiatives for both small business owners and consumers. Small business owners, for example, can receive free, targeted Facebook ads for the day and can download free marketing material for display in store windows. Consumer benefits include a $25 American Express statement credit for shopping at a small business on Saturday.
